The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) is pleased to announce a “Call for Papers” for Volume 12 of our journal The Pearson Papers.
The environment is an issue that can no longer be neglected. Despite this knowledge, international institutions and states still respond in silos instead of understanding the relationship and interconnections among cross-cutting issues. Environmental degradation, natural disasters and the competition for resources have a real impact on the success or failure of peace operations and post-conflict peacebuilding efforts. Conversely, peace operations are not neutral in their effects and managing change can also have intended and unintended impacts on the environment. Consequently, it is imperative that the environment be factored into the overall response to conflict.
Volume 12 of The Pearson Papers aims to further the understanding of the way in which environmental issues affect the conduct of peace operations and vice-versa. Such understanding, in turn, will help in planning for future missions and for post-conflict peacebuilding efforts.
The editors of The Pearson Papers welcome the submission of your academic papers, field notes or short articles for publication. We accept submissions in both official languages. The deadline for submission to Volume 12, Issue 1 is January 7, 2009. We look forward to a wide breadth of submissions and aim to provide a space for constructive dialogue, provocative questions, and thoughtful commentary.

Set against a backdrop of emerging powers, today's global economy presents Canada with both challenges and opportunities. International trade policy must evolve in such a way as to confront those challenges, seize the opportunities, and, all the while, respect the well-entrenched principles of Canada's foreign policy.

QFPC 2007 will engage students in a dialogue on Canada's role amidst a dynamic global order. This conference provides delegates the opportunity to meet experts in these fields, to discuss major issues, and to create truly informed opinions. Organized by the Queen's International Affairs Association (QIAA), with the support of the Queen's Centre for International Relations (QCIR) and the Department of Political Studies, this conference is targeted for 150 undergraduate and graduate student participants from across Ontario and Québec.

Held on the beautiful Queen's Campus, this two day conference boasts a variety of engaging panels and several eminent speakers. Join us and connect yourself with Canada's foreign policy.

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Research Library's IES Database simplifies the search for world-wide economic indicators. Individual indicators (such as GDP and CPI) are linked, and each link has a description of the data. Included in each record is the title, corporate author, publisher, years covered in the data series, type of publication (text, table, chart), frequency with which the data is published, country of origin, a URL, available languages, subject headings, format (.pdf, .xls, etc.), a summary (where available), and any notes needed to clarify the data. The database is title, country, subject and keyword searchable. The links will be checked regularly to maintain accuracy.
Indicators are continually being added.

Policy and Society is an interdisciplinary journal exploring policy and its manifestations in broader political, economic and social contexts.
Each issue of Policy and Society is typically devoted to a single policy theme. The theme may be approached from the perspective of single or multiple disciplines.

Policy and Society seeks to explore how policies are shaped by their context and, in turn, shape it. The Journal welcomes submissions that deal with policy theory and practice at the local, national and/or international level, including review issues on the state of the field.

Wikigender is a project initiated by the OECD Development Centre to facilitate the exchange and improve the knowledge on gender-related issues around the world. In particular, Wikigender tries to gather empirical evidence and identify adequate statistics to measure gender equality. In this respect, Wikigender serves as a pilot project for the OECD Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies. Based on the work of the OECD Gender, Institutions and Development Data Base, Wikigender aims to highlight the importance of social institutions such as norms, traditions and cultural practices that impact on gender equality.

The Journal is currently accepting both articles and book reviews for its Winter/Spring 2009 issue. The theme of the issue is "Rethinking Liberalism.” We are also accepting papers on any topic within the field of international relations.   Feel free to contact me at your convenience.

The Institute for Public Policy Research is the UK's leading progressive think tank, producing cutting edge research and innovative policy ideas for a just, democratic and sustainable world.

ippr was founded by Lord Hollick, who developed the idea for an independent progressive think tank in 1986. With Lord Eatwell, Lord Hollick spent two years establishing the institute, which was publicly launched in 1988 with Tessa Blackstone as its first chair and James Cornford as its first director.

Since 1988, we have been at the forefront of progressive debate and policymaking in the UK. Through our independent research and analysis we define new agendas for change and provide practical solutions to challenges across the full range of public policy issues.

With offices in both London and Newcastle, we ensure our outlook is as broad-based as possible, while our Security Commission, International Team, Climate Change Programme, and Migration, Equalities and Citizenship Team  extend our partnerships and influence beyond the UK, giving us a truly world-class reputation for high quality research.

At freedocumentaries.org we strongly believe that in order to have a true democracy, there has to be a free flow of easily accessible information. Unfortunately, many important perspectives, opinions, and facts never make it to our televisions or cinemas (you can watch movies in our media category if you want to know why).

For this reason we decided to start freedocumentaries.org, a site where anyone with an internet connection can watch a movie to educate themselves or simply explore another perspective whenever they please. These movies aren't just for education but are also for entertainment.

Dear Graduate Student, We invite you to submit your paper for our 4th annual graduate conference in political science, international relations,  public policy.   More details can be seen on the conference

A Symposium on the Cold War
Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum
Carp, Ontario
November 7-9, 2008

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum, is proud to announce its first Cold War symposium in Fall 2008. This event is set to correspond with the opening of two new, permanent exhibitions and an inaugural Cold War memorial ceremony to coincide with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Diefenbunker, Canada’s Cold War Museum is located in Carp, Ontario, about 30 minutes west of Ottawa. Constructed from 1959 to 1961, the Diefenbunker served for over 30 years as a military base and as the federal government’s emergency
government headquarters in case of nuclear war. Closed in 1994, the cavernous underground facility was brought back to life as a museum by local volunteers in 1998.
The symposium is entitled Cold Culture: A symposium on new approaches to Cold
War research, education and expression. This event is being organized to bring
together a broad range of professional scholars, historians, artists, filmmaker, teachers, museum professionals and journalists who are involved in the exploration of themes in Cold War history, and who shape how the event is understood today. Participants are encouraged to consider how those interpreting the period have adopted new and varied approaches through which they seek to build a framework to make meaning of the conflict.
International and comparative topics are strongly encouraged.
Questions about the Cold Culture symposium should be directed to Alexandra Badzak,
Executive Director at director@diefenbunker.ca or 613-839-0007. Anyone interested in
presenting a paper (individual or part of a proposed session) or organizing a panel should electronically submit their name, affiliation, and an abstract of 500 words or less bySeptember 15th, 2008 (Word or PDF file). For more information visit
www.diefenbunker.ca

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=14680048404&ref=mf
In addition to news and commentaries on defence and security issues (with a strong emphasis on Canada), the group encourages debates on these topics and occasionally lists employment opportunities (mostly in Political Science and POLCAN-generated), as they relate to IR, strategic studies, international security, etc.

Beyond Intractability: A Free Knowledge Base on More Constructive Approaches to Destructive Conflict

Since its founding in 1994, the PPC has been engaged in innovative research in the area of peacekeeping and peace operations. The Pearson Papers provide a forum where researchers and practitioners can openly explore the complexities of evolving peace operations. The journal is peer-reviewed, and represents an opportunity for professionals and practitioners to engage and share in an interdisciplinary dialogue on the complexities experienced in peace operations within the global peace and security realm.
The complexity of peace operations and of the context in which civilian, military, and police are being deployed underscores the fact that there is no “one-size-fits-all” model of peace operations. With this in mind, while there should be space for some improvisation based on circumstances and context, contemporary peace operations should not rely entirely on ad hoc structures. In order to be effective, peace operations must evidence a balance between flexibility and coherence. While there seems to be a broad consensus on the need for integration, questions remain as to the what, when and how to integrate.
To facilitate the exploration and enhanced understanding of today’s complex peace operations, including Integrated Missions, Provincial Reconstruction Teams and Hybrid Operations, the upcoming issue of The Pearson Papers (Fall 2008) will further explore the theme of cooperation and coordination by focusing more specifically on the interoperability of integration.

  • How is integration of different actors conducted in practice?
  • What factors are necessary for integration to be successful?
  • How is success measured and evaluated?

The upcoming issue will complement the current issue of The Pearson Papers (Spring 2008) which looks at the Challenges of Effective Cooperation and Coordination in Peace Operations.

The editors of The Pearson Papers welcome the submission of your academic papers, field notes or short articles for publication. We accept submissions in both official languages. The deadline for submission is July 15, 2008. We look forward to a wide breadth of submissions and aim to provide an environment where constructive dialogue, provocative questions, and thoughtful commentary will facilitate understanding integration.

Global Political Economy
Fixing Finance- Foreign Affairs Newsletter, September 24, 2008

As ongoing financial chaos upends Wall Street, pundits and politicians are debating the causes of the economic crisis and proposing solutions to it. The tendency to reexamine the architecture of the world economy is nothing new; Foreign Affairs authors have done so many times before in the wake of sudden economic shocks. Following the recession of the late 1970s and early 1980s, economists Harold van B. Cleveland and Ramachandra Bhagavatula called for monetary reform. Robert B. Reich, reacting to the 1987 "Black Monday" stock market crash, blamed supply-side economic thinking for the failure. In the aftermath of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, too, experts examined the wreckage and went back to the drawing board. Jeffrey E. Garten recounted "Lessons for the Next Financial Crisis," Alan S. Blinder listed "Eight Steps to a New Financial Order," and Peter G. Peterson and Carla A. Hills, co-chairs of a Council on Foreign Relations task force, recommended a series of reforms in "The Future of the International Financial Architecture."

At their 25th Conference, the European Ministers of Justice invited the Committee of Ministers to consider the possible setting up of a European register of national and international standards, starting as a matter of priority with standards in the field of the fight against terrorism.

The Committee of Experts on Terrorism (the CODEXTER) agreed on the usefulness of drawing up short country profiles addressing the most relevant questions related to member states' standards and capacity to respond to terrorist acts. To this end, it decided to
